Historical Background

The origin of Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, proclaiming that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially outlawed slavery in the Confederate states on January 1, 1863. Texas was the most remote of the slave states, and it had a low presence of Union troops, so enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent.

Juneteenth is significant as it marks the end of slavery in the United States and represents a moment of jubilation and hope for African Americans. It is a time to reflect on the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history.

Juneteenth celebrations vary widely and often include:

On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. This marked a significant milestone in the recognition of the historical and cultural importance of the day.

Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom but also a time for reflection and a call to continue addressing issues of racial inequality and injustice in the United States.
